Max Verstappen extended his momentum in the 2025 Formula 1 season with a commanding win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, securing back-to-back victories after converting pole into a flawless drive around the streets of Baku.

The Dutchman never looked troubled across the 51 laps, taking the chequered flag 14.6 seconds clear of George Russell, who delivered a strong result for Mercedes. Carlos Sainz rounded out the podium, securing a landmark finish for Williams in third.

It was an afternoon to forget for championship leader Oscar Piastri. Starting ninth, the Australian jumped the lights at the start before crashing out at Turn 5 on the opening lap, ending his race almost before it had begun.

Behind the podium places, Mercedes protégé Kimi Antonelli narrowly missed out on a maiden top-three finish, crossing the line in fourth. Liam Lawson impressed for Racing Bulls in fifth, ahead of Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda and McLaren’s Lando Norris.

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc followed closely in eighth and ninth for Ferrari, with Isack Hadjar rounding out the points for Racing Bulls.

Drivers’ Championship Picture

Oscar Piastri may have crashed out in Baku, but thanks to his dominant early-season form he still leads the title fight with 324 points. Lando Norris has closed the gap slightly and now sits 25 points back, while Max Verstappen’s back-to-back wins have hauled him into third, 69 points off the lead. Behind them, George Russell continues to anchor Mercedes’ campaign in fourth, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton flying the flag for Ferrari in the top six.

Piastri’s crash has breathed life into the chase, with Norris and Verstappen both cutting into his advantage. Russell and Leclerc remain outside contenders, while the midfield battle is tighter than ever. All eyes now turn to the next round, Singapore — where McLaren must prove Baku was just a stumble, and Verstappen will look to keep his momentum rolling.

Verstappen Dominates at Monza

Max Verstappen converted pole into victory at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix after a commanding drive at Monza. The Red Bull star briefly duelled with Lando Norris in the opening stages but quickly pulled away to secure his third win of the 2025 season. Norris came home second after McLaren enforced team orders, with Oscar Piastri taking the final podium spot in third.

McLaren Team Orders Raise Eyebrows

A slow pit stop for Norris flipped the order between the McLaren drivers, with Piastri briefly moving ahead. Piastri benefitted from a lightning-fast 1.9s stop, while Norris lost significant time after a wheel gun issue delayed his service to nearly six seconds. McLaren instructed Piastri to let Norris reclaim second place, referencing a similar scenario in Hungary last year when Norris had returned a position.

Piastri Plays the Team Game

Oscar Piastri ultimately complied with the team’s instruction but was heard expressing his frustration over the radio. “We said a slow pit stop was part of racing,” Piastri told his engineer Tom Stallard. “I don’t really get what changed here. But if you really want to do it, then I’ll do it.”

Afterwards, Piastri denied he was shocked by the order, explaining that the team had discussed different scenarios ahead of time. “No, not really,” the Australian said. “We have had discussions about all kinds of situations… I’m sure we’ll review it and discuss more, but it wasn’t unexpected.”

When pressed to expand on his radio comments, the nine-time grand prix winner brushed it off. “I think the radio call kind of says enough,” Piastri remarked, refusing to elaborate further.

Verstappen Reacts Over the Radio

From the lead, Verstappen was informed by race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase about McLaren’s decision. “Ha! Just because he had a slow stop?” the Dutchman chuckled over the radio, before Lambiase reminded him to stay focused. Unbothered, Verstappen drove on to the chequered flag and sealed another decisive victory.

Leclerc Misses Out, Mercedes Score Double Points

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc couldn’t replicate his Monza triumph from 2024, finishing a lonely fourth in front of the Tifosi. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton secured fifth and sixth for Mercedes, ensuring both Silver Arrows scored solid points.

Tsunoda vs Lawson: Clash at Turn 4

Yuki Tsunoda criticised Liam Lawson after the pair made contact through Turn 4. Lawson, who started on softs and had already switched to hards, ran side-by-side with Tsunoda before both went wide. Lawson briefly passed but returned the position later.

Tsunoda Questions Lawson’s Tactics

Tsunoda argued that Lawson’s defence was unnecessary given their differing strategies. “I was fighting for points, and he wasn’t,” Tsunoda said. “If it’s for points, I understand. But otherwise, what’s the point?”

The Japanese driver also had a scrappy first lap, skipping Turn 1 after nearly colliding with Lewis Hamilton. “I’m happy with my decision – I avoided contact. He divebombed into me,” Tsunoda explained.

The Italian Grand Prix at Monza is one of the most historic races in Formula 1, but the modern road course hides a darker past. Decades ago, the race also ran on it’s towering banked oval, a section of track that was eventually abandoned after a series of tragedies.

Monza Built for Pure Speed

When it first opened in 1922, it was designed as a combination of a sweeping road course and two enormous 21-degree banked corners. Together they created a fearsome 10km layout where cars thundered across the start/finish straight twice per lap.

By the late 1950s, it had become the fastest circuit in the world. Drivers were pushing speeds beyond the limits of machinery and safety. Even today, Monza holds that crown — Max Verstappen shattered the track record in 2025, clocking the fastest lap in Formula 1 history at 264.682 km/h.

Early Tragedies at Monza

Monza’s banking quickly earned a deadly reputation.

  • In 1928, Emilio Materassi crashed into the main stand, killing himself and 22 spectators.
  • In 1933, three drivers were killed in one afternoon.

The tragedies cemented Monza’s image as a breathtaking but unforgiving temple of speed.

The 1961 Monza Disaster

The darkest day came at the 1961 Italian Grand Prix. Ferrari drivers Wolfgang von Trips and Phil Hill arrived at Monza locked in a title fight.

Von Trips, starting on pole, clashed with Jim Clark’s Lotus on lap two. His Ferrari vaulted into the crowd at terrifying speed, killing the German instantly along with 14 spectators. The car bounced back onto the track, leaving chaos in its wake.

Despite the carnage, the race was not stopped. Hill went on to win at Monza, securing the world championship. It proved to be the final Grand Prix held on the banking.

Why Monza’s Banking Still Stands

F1 dropped it’s banking from 1962 onwards, but the concrete structure remains to this day. Demolition plans surfaced in 2000, yet high costs and a global petition fronted by fans and racing legends like Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, and Phil Hill saved it.

Restoration work in the 2010s made the banking safe for visitors, and today fans can still walk its daunting incline outside race weekends.

Monza Today

Since the banking’s removal, Monza has relied solely on its road course. Over the years, chicanes and safety measures have been added, but Monza remains F1’s fastest track.

The old oval now stands as a ghostly relic, reminding fans of the days when Monza pushed Formula 1 to the very edge — and paid the ultimate price.

During the free practice sessions at the Italian Grand Prix, the data already suggested Max Verstappen had the tools for a strong weekend. Unlike last year at Monza, Red Bull was competitive right from the start, thanks in part to the RB21’s aerodynamic efficiency. With Verstappen comfortable and confident behind the wheel, it looked like the perfect recipe for success.

Beating McLaren to Pole

Despite the advantage, Verstappen still had to dig deep to fend off the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. His ultimate lap delivered not only pole position but also an all-time F1 record: an average speed of 264.682 km/h, the fastest lap in Formula 1 history.

First Sector Breakthrough

Red Bull’s weekend wasn’t flawless. They struggled in the first sector during practice, but crucial adjustments paid off in qualifying. Verstappen regained ground with higher top speeds, courtesy of a trimmed rear wing, which offset McLaren’s strength in the middle sector.

The Top Speed Edge

McLaren chose to run more wing, giving Norris the quickest second sector, but Verstappen lost only 0.045s overall. His bravery through Lesmo 1 and superior straight-line speed proved decisive. The margins were razor thin, and without such precision, the four-time world champion might not even have made the top three.

Ferrari Falters at Home

For Ferrari, the session was anything but smooth. The Scuderia opted for maximum speed in front of the Tifosi, turning the SF-25 into a rocket in sector one. Yet Charles Leclerc paid the price in the high-speed corners, where he lost over a tenth to Norris.

A Strategic Battle Looms

Looking ahead to the race, Verstappen’s pole is far from a guaranteed win. McLaren’s long-standing advantage in tyre management and the ability to run two cars strategically could prove decisive. Norris and Piastri, both in the title hunt, are unafraid to make bold choices, as Hungary showed when Norris won with a one-stop strategy.

Verstappen’s Advantage at Monza

Even so, Verstappen has manoeuvred himself into a strong position. His superior top speed makes McLaren’s task of overtaking far more difficult, especially with DRS less effective at Monza’s ultra-fast layout. An average lap speed of 264.682 km/h cements his achievement as something truly extraordinary.

The 2025 Formula 1 season returns to one of its most iconic venues this weekend with the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Round 16 of 24, the race kicks off the final European leg before the long-haul flyaways and could play a pivotal role in shaping this year’s championship fight.

The Championship Picture

Oscar Piastri arrives at Monza in control of the standings after his victory in the Dutch Grand Prix, which, combined with Lando Norris’s costly engine failure, has given him a 34-point cushion over his McLaren teammate. With eight races remaining, every point matters, and Monza’s high-speed straights will put both McLarens under immense pressure to maximise results.

Behind them, Ferrari and Mercedes are locked in a fierce battle for third place in the Constructors’ standings. Lewis Hamilton, now racing in Ferrari red for the first time at Monza, will be one of the weekend’s biggest storylines. The seven-time champion has a five-place grid penalty for a yellow-flag infringement in Zandvoort, where his race ended in the barriers. Despite the setback, the Tifosi will be out in force, creating one of the most electric atmospheres of the season.

What to Expect at Monza

The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is famed for its blistering speed, with cars running minimal downforce to reach over 220 mph on the straights. Slipstreaming and DRS battles often define the race, while heavy braking zones into the Rettifilo chicane and Variante della Roggia provide prime overtaking opportunities. Strategy tends to be straightforward, but tyre wear can become a factor if track temperatures climb.

With the championship fight intensifying and the home crowd backing Ferrari, the 2025 Italian GP promises drama on and off the track.

Drivers to Watch

  • Oscar Piastri – The current championship leader looks composed and confident. A strong result in Italy would further cement his bid for the title.
  • Lando Norris – After the heartbreak of Zandvoort, Norris will be desperate to bounce back. His pace at Monza last year suggests he could be a real threat.
  • Lewis Hamilton – Making his first Monza appearance with Ferrari, Hamilton faces a grid penalty but will have the crowd firmly behind him. If anyone can carve through the field here, it’s him.
  • Max Verstappen – Sitting further back in the standings, Verstappen remains a dangerous competitor. Red Bull’s straight-line speed could give him a crucial edge at Monza.

Oscar Piastri delivered the performance of his Formula 1 career at Zandvoort, converting pole position into victory at the Dutch Grand Prix. The McLaren driver mastered the 72-lap contest, keeping his composure while chaos unfolded behind him, to claim a landmark win ahead of home hero Max Verstappen and shock podium finisher Isack Hadjar.

Piastri Converts Pole to Victory

Starting from pole, Piastri controlled the race from the outset. Despite late pressure from Verstappen, the Australian maintained a steady rhythm and crossed the line just 1.2 seconds clear of the Red Bull, earning McLaren valuable points in the constructors’ fight.

For Verstappen, second place still delighted the passionate Dutch crowd, while the story of the day came from Hadjar. In just his rookie campaign, the Racing Bulls driver capitalised on late drama to clinch an unexpected maiden podium in third – a career-defining moment.

Russell and Albon Complete the Top Five

George Russell brought his Mercedes home in fourth after fending off a hard-charging Alexander Albon, who continued his fine form for Williams with fifth place. Oliver Bearman impressed again with sixth for Haas, ahead of the Aston Martin duo of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso.

Behind them, Yuki Tsunoda secured ninth in the second Red Bull, while Esteban Ocon rounded out the points in tenth for Haas.

Drama in the Netherlands

The race was far from straightforward, with a string of high-profile retirements shaking up the order. In the final laps, heartbreak struck Lando Norris, who retired from a comfortable second place with a power unit failure, promoting Hadjar onto the podium.

Lewis Hamilton was the first casualty, crashing heavily at Turn 3 in the opening stages.

Later, Charles Leclerc spun into the barriers at the same corner after contact with Kimi Antonelli, bringing Ferrari’s day to a premature end.

With Piastri’s breakthrough win, Verstappen’s homecoming podium, and Hadjar’s fairy-tale debut rostrum, the Dutch Grand Prix proved one of the most dramatic races of the season. Valtteri Bottas has explained the motivation behind his decision to sign with Cadillac’s Formula 1 project, as the American marque prepares for its grid debut in 2026.

The Finn was announced on Tuesday as one half of Cadillac’s maiden driver line-up, alongside fellow veteran Sergio Perez. Together, the duo brings 527 grand prix starts, 16 race wins, and 106 podiums, giving Cadillac one of the most experienced pairings on the grid.

From Reserve Driver to Full-Time Return

After losing his seat with Stake F1 at the end of 2024, Bottas spent 2025 as Mercedes’ reserve driver, supporting the team and mentoring rookie Kimi Antonelli.

But the 34-year-old was eager to return to a full-time race seat, and Cadillac’s ambitious entry offered the perfect opportunity. His decade of experience, spanning both title-contending machinery with Mercedes and the midfield grind with Alfa Romeo/Stake, made him an ideal choice.

Cadillac’s Long-Term Project

The team, backed by General Motors, will run Ferrari power units for its first two seasons before switching to an in-house engine in 2028. Bottas is confident Cadillac can evolve into a competitive force.

“From the moment I began speaking with Cadillac, I felt something different – something ambitious but also grounded

This isn’t just a racing project; it’s a long-term vision. It’s not every day that you get a chance to be part of something being built from the ground up and helping shape it into something that truly belongs on the F1 grid.

I’ve had the honour of working with some of the best teams in the world, and I can already see the same professionalism and hunger here.

This is an iconic brand with a big legacy in American motorsport, and to be a part of the story as it enters the world stage of F1 is incredibly special for me.

I’m looking forward to representing the American spirit of racing on the greatest circuits in the world.

I’d also like to thank Mercedes for their unwavering support and sportsmanship in facilitating such an exciting step.

A Statement of Intent

Bottas’ arrival, paired with Perez’s comeback, signals Cadillac’s intent to be competitive from the outset. Rather than opting for rookies or unproven talents, the team has chosen experience and stability — a clear sign it wants to make an immediate impact in F1’s fiercely contested midfield.

With Formula 1 expanding rapidly in the United States, Cadillac also has the potential to become a flagship brand for American fans. Bottas, who has raced across three different eras of modern F1, is well-placed to guide the project through its formative years while lending credibility to its long-term ambitions.

Sergio Perez believes that he and Valtteri Bottas have the right blend of experience and determination to turn Cadillac into “a real contender” when the American marque makes its long-awaited Formula 1 debut in 2026.

Cadillac Joins the Grid in 2026

Cadillac will enter F1 as the sport’s 11th team, backed by General Motors. After months of speculation, the team confirmed Perez and Bottas as its debut line-up, immediately establishing one of the most experienced pairings on the grid.

Between them, the duo brings:

  • 527 grand prix starts
  • 106 podium finishes
  • 16 race wins

For a new team starting from scratch, this wealth of knowledge is invaluable. Both drivers know how to win, but also how to extract results in the midfield – a likely battleground for Cadillac in its formative years.

Perez’s Chance to Rebuild

Little has been seen of Perez since his departure from Red Bull at the end of 2024. After four seasons with the reigning champions, he exited quietly, having played the loyal supporting role in Max Verstappen’s championship dominance.

Now 35, Perez views Cadillac as a golden opportunity to reignite his Formula 1 career while shaping the identity of a brand-new team.

“Joining the Cadillac Formula 1 team is an incredibly exciting new chapter in my career,” said Perez. “From our first conversations, I could sense the passion and determination behind this project.

“It’s an honour to be part of building a team that can develop together so that, in time, we will fight at the very front. Cadillac is a legendary name in American motorsport, and to help bring such a fantastic company to Formula 1 is a huge responsibility, one I’m confident of taking on.

“I’m proud to be part of such an ambitious and meaningful project from the very beginning. I’m really pleased to be part of such a dynamic line-up, and together I believe we can help shape this team into a real contender — the team of the Americas.

“We’re counting on support from across the continent and want to make everyone proud.”

Bottas Adds Stability and Experience

While Perez took time away from the sport in 2025, Bottas remained closely involved as a Mercedes reserve driver and mentor to rookie Kimi Antonelli. The Finn also tested with McLaren, keeping sharp in case a race seat opened up.

For Cadillac, Bottas offers technical insight, steady leadership, and the calm experience of a driver who has spent nearly a decade inside title-contending machinery. His presence alongside Perez ensures the new team starts with a solid foundation.

Cadillac’s Long-Term Ambition

Cadillac will partner with Ferrari as an engine supplier for its first two seasons before launching its own in-house power unit for 2028. The project has already attracted attention from Hollywood, with Keanu Reeves producing a documentary chronicling the team’s journey from inception to its debut.

The combination of American backing, seasoned drivers, and long-term planning has sparked excitement that Cadillac could quickly establish itself as more than just a midfield runner.

Cadillac has officially announced that Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez will form its driver pairing for the 2026 Formula 1 season.

The American marque will join the grid as the sport’s 11th team, and after months of speculation linking it with several names, it has settled on two of the most experienced drivers in the paddock. Between them, Bottas and Perez boast 527 grand prix starts.

One of the Most Experienced Pairings in F1 History

In selecting Bottas and Perez, Cadillac has secured a duo with:

  • 16 combined race victories
  • Seven constructors’ championships
  • A wealth of experience fighting in both the midfield and at the front

This makes them one of the most seasoned pairings Formula 1 has ever seen.

Cadillac’s Early Technical Path

Cadillac will partner with Ferrari as its engine supplier for its first two seasons before developing its own in-house power unit for 2028. Test and development work could begin as early as 2025, with TPC running an old Ferrari chassis.

Bottas: From Mercedes to Cadillac

Both drivers return to the grid after sitting out 2025. For Bottas, 2024 marked his first point-less F1 campaign, endured during his final season with Stake – a move he later admitted was a “mistake” after leaving Mercedes in 2021.

Despite this, Bottas remained active in 2025:

  • Returned to Mercedes as reserve driver and mentor to rookie Kimi Antonelli
  • Took part in a McLaren test at Barcelona, keeping himself sharp should a race seat have been required

Perez: A Year Away from Racing

Perez’s 2024 season at Red Bull ended in disappointment, scoring just 48 points across 18 races after Imola. He was subsequently dropped from the team and stepped away from F1 entirely in 2025.

Instead, Perez focused on family life, staying out of the spotlight and not attending a single grand prix since his last start in Abu Dhabi.

The Big Reveal

Cadillac unveiled its new pairing in a short social media video featuring actor Keanu Reeves, who is producing a documentary on the team’s journey from conception to its debut in Australia, just over five months away.
