Mortal Kombat II Delayed to 2026, New Release Date and Poster

One of the year’s most anticipated releases, Mortal Kombat II, had been slated to hit theatres on October 24, 2025. That plan has now changed.

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have officially shifted the release of Mortal Kombat II all the way to May 15, 2026. The seven-month delay is a significant one, but it positions the film for a prime pre-summer box office launch—where it’s expected to thrive—rather than risk getting lost amid the crowded Halloween and holiday release calendar this year. Alongside the announcement comes a brand-new release date poster, giving fans their first updated look at the brutal sequel.

Returning to the director’s chair is Simon McQuoid, who helmed the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot. The sequel’s screenplay is penned by Jeremy Slater (The Exorcist, Moon Knight), promising an even bloodier and more ambitious follow-up. True to the franchise’s spirit, Mortal Kombat II has officially secured an R Rating for “strong bloody violence and gore, and language.”

The film will once again bring the iconic video game battles to the big screen, this time raising the stakes with the arrival of Shao Kahn. Earthrealm’s champions, now joined by the fan-favourite Johnny Cage, must endure the ultimate no-holds-barred fight for survival in a desperate attempt to overthrow Kahn’s dark rule and preserve the fate of humanity.

Karl Urban headlines the sequel as Johnny Cage, joining returning cast members Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, and Hiroyuki Sanada reprising his role as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion.

Produced by New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster, Broken Road, and Fireside Films, Mortal Kombat II is set for worldwide distribution via Warner Bros. Pictures. With its new date locked in, the stage is set for an all-out cinematic bloodbath next summer.
