Sony is marking 30 years since the PlayStation brand first entered the console market with a fresh anniversary collaboration. After releasing PS1-inspired consoles and accessories in Japan last year, the focus has now shifted to the US and UK — this time, with sneakers.

On September 29, the exact anniversary of the PS1’s UK debut, PlayStation revealed a new collection of limited-edition sneakers created in partnership with Reebok. Three unique designs have been announced, each built on a classic Reebok silhouette, and each one will be released exclusively in a different region — mirroring the PS1’s original staggered global launch.

UK Exclusive: Reebok Workout Plus

The first pair to hit shelves will be the PlayStation x Reebok Workout Plus, launching in the UK. Styled in the iconic PS1 grey, these trainers feature the classic multi-coloured PlayStation logo on the side, along with a removable lacelock designed to resemble the original console’s controller port.

The Workout Plus sneakers will be available at End Clothing for £150 starting October 15.

US Exclusive: Reebok Pump Omni Zone 2

Next in line are the PlayStation x Reebok Pump Omni Zone 2, arriving in the US on October 17. Like the UK release, these high-tops carry the PS1 grey theme but add darker grey detailing and a bold logo placement on the tongue.

Priced at $220, they will be sold through CNCPTS and also include the distinctive controller port lacelock attachment.

Japan Exclusive: Reebok Instapump Fury 94

Finally, Japan will see the release of the PlayStation x Reebok Instapump Fury 94 on October 14. These laceless sneakers stand out as the most colourful of the three designs, featuring multiple PS1 logos — one on the back of each shoe and another on a hanging tag.

They will be stocked at Beams for ¥37,000, rounding out the global tribute to PlayStation’s 30th anniversary.

In three decades of PlayStation, one truth has become impossible to ignore: the best-selling titles on Sony’s consoles are utterly dominated by Call of Duty and Rockstar Games. This isn’t shocking news — we all know how massive those franchises are — but seeing the data in black and white really drives it home.

The Numbers That Tell the Story

On the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation’s U.S. launch, Circana’s Mat Piscatella shared a breakdown of the top-selling PlayStation games of all time. The list spans from January 1995 through July 2025, covering the full PS1 through PS5 eras.

The results? Out of the top 20 games ranked by pure dollar sales, 15 are either Call of Duty or Rockstar titles. That’s a staggering dominance from just two publishers: Activision and Take-Two Interactive.

The Unstoppable Force of GTA and Call of Duty

Unsurprisingly, Grand Theft Auto V sits at number one on both lists, leading in both total dollar sales and units sold. The game has become a cultural juggernaut, staying relevant across three console generations.

Behind it, Call of Duty fills in much of the chart, with annual releases consistently climbing to the top year after year. Last year’s Black Ops 6 even managed to crack the top five in dollar sales and land at 11th in total units sold — all in under a year since release. That’s the kind of brand recognition most series can only dream of.

Other Heavy Hitters

There are a few notable exceptions in the rankings. Minecraft comes in with the second-most units sold overall, though it ranks seventh in dollar sales. And Marvel’s Spider-Man from 2018 is one of the biggest surprises, placing 11th in dollar sales and sixth in total units — outselling giants like Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Still, these are outliers. The chart is a stark reminder of just how deeply Rockstar’s open-world epics and Activision’s FPS empire dominate the PlayStation landscape.

Looking Ahead

With Grand Theft Auto VI set to launch in May 2026, it’s almost guaranteed the list will be shaken up again. And given the unrelenting popularity of Call of Duty, you can safely expect Black Ops 7 to carve out a spot as well. Three decades in, one thing is clear: when it comes to PlayStation’s sales history, it’s GTA and CoD’s world — we’re all just living in it.

On September 9, 1995, Sony’s original PlayStation officially launched in the United States, priced at $299. The console had already made waves in Japan nine months earlier, but its arrival in America marked a turning point that would change gaming forever. Thirty years later, the memories and the games remain just as iconic.

A Bold New Era in Gaming

Sony was stepping into uncharted territory. Before the PlayStation, the gaming world was dominated by Nintendo and Sega. Many doubted that a newcomer could compete — yet the PS1 proved them wrong almost instantly.

With its powerful 32-bit hardware, CD-ROM format, and focus on 3D graphics, the PlayStation pushed gaming into a new era. It sold more than 100 million units worldwide, becoming the first console to ever hit that milestone.

The Launch and Beyond

The American launch lineup wasn’t stacked with all-time greats, but it set the stage for what was to come. Titles like Battle Arena Toshinden, Ridge Racer, and Rayman gave players a glimpse of what the system could do. Within just a few years, the library exploded with some of the most legendary franchises in history.

From the groundbreaking stealth of Metal Gear Solid to the emotional storytelling of Final Fantasy VII, the survival-horror chills of Resident Evil, and the racing precision of Gran Turismo, the PS1 quickly became a home for genre-defining experiences.

The Iconic PlayStation Library

The sheer variety of the PlayStation’s catalogue remains staggering. Whether it was 3D fighters, platformers, horror, or experimental rhythm games, Sony’s debut console delivered. Among the standouts:

  • Final Fantasy VII & VIII
  • Resident Evil
  • Silent Hill
  • Tomb Raider
  • Crash Bandicoot
  • Gran Turismo
  • Tekken
  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
  • PaRappa the Rapper
  • Medal of Honor
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
  • Syphon Filter
  • Dino Crisis

These weren’t just games — they were defining cultural moments that set the standard for decades to follow.

Memories That Still Matter

For many players, the PlayStation wasn’t just a console — it was a foundation. Personally, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VIII, and Resident Evil formed a triumvirate of favorite franchises that I still follow 30 years later.

The PS1 wasn’t only about graphics or sound; it was about feel. That iconic start-up chime, the grey box under the TV, the memory card slots — they all carry nostalgia that time can’t erase.

PlayStation’s Cultural Impact

Beyond the games, the PlayStation helped transform video games into mainstream entertainment. In the late ’90s, it was no longer just kids huddled around a console — the PS1 sat proudly in living rooms, dorms, and bedrooms across the world.

It bridged the gap between gaming and pop culture, appearing in music videos, films, and advertisements. Characters like Lara Croft and Crash Bandicoot became household names, while franchises like Final Fantasy proved that games could deliver cinematic storytelling on par with Hollywood.

From PS1 to PS5: A Lasting Legacy

Three decades later, the PlayStation 5 continues the journey that began in 1995. While the hardware has evolved into cutting-edge SSDs, ray tracing, and near photo-realistic visuals, the essence remains the same: bold, imaginative games that define eras.

From Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Horizon and Spider-Man to remakes of PS1 classics like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the DNA of that first grey box lives on. The legacy of the PS1 is more than nostalgia — it’s the foundation of a brand that continues to shape the future of gaming.
